This study was designed to test cognitive processing, concentration, and error reduction on varying light color temperatures.

Study Methods: This study consisted of having students in two different schools exposed to “standard” and “blue-enriched” lighting. The standard lighting was set at 30 foot candles and 3000K while the blue-enriched lighting was set at 30 foot candles and 5500K.
The students were then exposed to 4 different scenarios:

  1. Standard lighting during learning and testing times
  2. Standard lighting during learning times and blue enriched light during test taking times
  3. Blue enriched light during learning times and standard lighting during tests
  4. Blue enriched light during learning and testing times

Results: The results showed cognitive processing, concentration, and error reduction all increased under scenario 4 as compared to scenario 1.
The results showed cognitive processing, concentration, and error reduction all increased under scenario 4 as compared to scenario 1.

  • Cognitive processing speed improved by a factor of 2
  • Concentration speed improved by a factor of 2
  • Error Rate was reduced by 70%
